The Self-Other Relationship Between Transcendental and Ethical Inquiries

    Get PDF
This paper discusses two approaches of the relationship between subjectivity and intersubjectivity. The Husserlian one, a transcendental phenomenological investigation of the possibility of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, and the Waldenfelsian one, an ethical phenomenological investigation of day to day intersubjective interactions. Both authors pretend to give account of the conditions of possibility of intersubjective interaction. However, Husserl starts with the investigation of the transcendental structure of subjectivity, that is, the fundamental conditions required for the appearance of consciousness. By contrast, Waldenfels looks first at practical interaction and draws conclusions on the deeper structure of subjectivity based on the traces he discovers to be characteristic for this interaction. Our interest lies in determining which of the two approaches should be given priority for the investigation of the constitution of intersubjectivity

Real “Smart Cities”: Insights from Civitas PROSPERITY

A city does not need to be smart, but to allow people be, behave, live and work smart(er). Furthermore, smart should not be necessarily equalled to high technology, but to the sound management, communication and use of available resources, be they tangible or intangible. Anyway our evolution cannot be limited to technology, even if the latter has become unavoidable. If not accompanied by a comprehensive perspective and coherent management, technology may rather block than facilitate resilience and sustainable urban development. Not always the most technically advanced and expensive solutions are the best (most effective) ones or frequently they cannot work alone, needing to be complemented by soft / lower-cost measures. Moreover, even if the actual “smart city” paradigm would be accepted, there do not seem to be enough resources (especially primary ones) to provide high-tech for everybody (WWF, 2018). In this case high-tech might be replaced by smart-tech staying for innovative solutions of best coping with given situations no matter the level of scientific, cultural, economic and behavioural advancement. These are some of the conclusions of a recent ongoing project funded through Horizon 2020, pleading for a global integrated perspective and providing the appropriate tools to sustainably shape and enhance it. Being built in response to the challenge “Real Smart Cities. Best practices and concepts for the future”, the present contribution informs on how Civitas PROSPERITY (applied research project) integrated these principles and produced innovation in the field of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP). The focus is on bright solutions that can be equally extended and applied in other fields of urban management beyond mobility, such as energy, land-use, cultural heritage etc

STUDY ON ALCOHOLIC FERMENTATION IN A STATIONARY BASKET BIOREACTOR WITH IMMOBILIZED YEAST CELLS

    Get PDF
The use of a stationary basket bioreactor with immobilized S. cerevisiae cells indicated the possibility to extend the number of alcoholic fermentation cycles that can be carried out with the same biocatalysts to over nine. Although the rates of glucose consumption and ethanol production were lower than those recorded for the mobile beds of immobilized yeast cells, the mechanical lysis of the biocatalysts is avoided in the case of basket bed. Due to the substrate and product accumulation inside the basket bed, the fermentation process can be improved by washing out the biocatalysts bed over two or four cycles

KINETIC STUDIES ON BIODEGRADATION OF LIPIDS FROM OLIVE OIL MILL WASTEWATERS WITH FREE AND IMMOBILIZED Bacillus sp. CELLS

    Get PDF
The studies on the biodegradation of lipids from olive oil mill wastewater with free and immobilized Bacillus sp. cells indicated that the maximum specific rate of the process is reached at pH = 8. The use of immobilized cells allows to increasing the number of biodegradation process cycles, but reduces the rate of the process. In this case, the process rate depends on the biocatalysts size and cells concentration inside them. Thus, at bacterial cells concentration of 9 g d.w./100 mL biocatalyst, the apparent specific rate varied from 4.65 to 1.46×10-2 h-1 by increasing the biocatalyst particles diameter from 3 to 4.2 mm.The cumulated influences of the particles size and cells concentration have been included in a mathematical model for the apparent specific rate of lipids biodegradation. The model offers a good concordance with the experimental data, the average deviation being of +/- 7.38%

Nitrogen is a crucial element in the production of both leguminous and non-leguminous crops and has pivotal impact on the growth of legumes. The yield of soybean mainly d1 depends on the accumulation of nitrogen and chlorophyll content in leaves. A pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of phosphorus (P) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) treatments, applied in combination with Pseudomonas fluorescence and Azotobacter chroococcum on the chlorophyll and nitrogen content in soybean (Glycine max. (L) Merr). P and PGPR were applied in the soil before sowing. Soybean plants (cv Zodiac) were grown on soil-sand mixture with P deficiency at two water regimes - 70% water holding capacity of soil (WHC) as sufficient supply and 35% WHC as low water supply. The results revealed an overall increase in chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll content in the PGPR treated plants, compared to control (unfertilized) samples under normal soil moisture conditions. With regard to P supply, chlorophyll content was uniform in all treatments and there were no significant changes of chlorophyll concentration in normal soil water regime. However, phosphorus supply decreased chlorophyll concentration under water stress conditions. Phosphorus fertilization and PGPR application increased significantly the nitrogen concentration in leaves of cv. Zodiac under sufficient water supply. Under low water supply the P application increased the concentration of nitrogen in roots in comparison to control plants. Hence, the results suggest that the utilization of rhizobacteria and P supplemental nutrition have the potential to enhance the chlorophyll and nitrogen content of soybean in normal water regime of soil
